Product IntroductionIntroducing the Icy Dock ToughArmor MB991SK-B 2.5" SATA Mobile Rack solution for use in external 3.5" drive bay (Floppy bay). It is a smaller form factor device built specifically for systems with small real estate to work with. Using a rugged heavy duty metal construction, it is capable to withstand the harshest enterprise type environments. The drive is fully secured by our proven technologies such as, the Eagle-Hook lock system and metal 2-segment safeguard key. Our rugged full metal EZ Slide Mini Tray allows interchangeability of data between multiple systems with other ToughArmor products. Suggested applications in Medical & Military systems, Media servers, and IPCs and approved by Tier 1 companies.
Efficient Space UseThe MB991SK-B is perfect for use in industrial PCs, SMB SFF servers, mobile DVR systems, or even home servers. These systems tend to use components that provide the needed features, in the smallest form factor available. The ability to house one SATA SSD or HDD in a single 3.5” bay makes it a valuable asset in specific applications such as, integration into an industrial imaging or medical device.

The MB991SK-B is capable of holding up in the harshest environments, with the rugged heavy duty metal construction throughout the entire device. The ToughArmor’s rugged full metal design is perfect for industrial devices that may require a flammability rating as the full metal material is considered to be already compliant with flammability requirements. So because of the high build quality, it can be used various enterprise systems including: military and law enforcement deployment, as well as manufacturing conditions such as embedded control systems and factory automation systems.
The rugged full metal design also allows heat dissipation transfer from the hard drives throughout the mobile rack. In addition, Multi-Flow Technology effectively routes air flow correctly for excellent passive cooling in key ventilation slots on the front, rear, top and bottom. Lastly, Anti-Vibration Technology and EMI Grounding are used to provide a stable environment for the hard drives or SSDs used to perform at its best.
Convenient Utility & AccessibilityThe front of the ToughArmor includes a status LED when the drive is powered on, off and accessed. Active Power Technology (APT) allows the status LED to be on only when a hard drive is inserted into the enclosure. For drive security, the eagle-hook lock system on the tray makes sure your hard drives will not eject when not needed. Additionally, the 2 segment key lock provides extra protection to theft of hard drives as well as safeguards any sensitive data.- The EZ Slide Mini trays make drive interchangeability and maintenance completely hassle free, in case of a hard drive failure. With a simple swap of the hard drive, your overall down time is greatly reduced especially if this occurs when it is time sensitive. The trays are also designed to accommodate 5 to 15mm height hard drive and SSD, creating a 2.5" hot swap bay for any standard SATA hard drives and SSDs. While the tray is not installed to the MB991SK-B, the Anti-Dust Flap feature helps prevent dust from entering into the mobile rack.
- Make ToughArmor On-The-GO! With MB991U3-1SBTo access your data outside of your system or in a remote location, the ToughArmor MB991U3-1SB is the way to go about. The drive tray slot of MB991U3-1SB is compatible with a variety of ToughArmor drive trays including the ToughArmor MB991, MB992, MB994, MB996 and MB998 series. This allows existing ToughArmor users to access their internal drive externally without opening up the case. It is a great tool for an individual drive diagnostic test. If you need to do a safe data erase or just simply expending system storage capacity, just remove the tray from the internal ToughArmor unit and insert it in the MB991U3-1SB to perform individual tasks externally with USB 3.0 interface. Best of all, the MB991U3-1SB uses USB bus-powered and it does not require a power adapter to operate. Simply connect the USB cable to any system and you are ready to go.

*The drive mobile rack enclosure needs to have a customized front water-resistant panel added to pass the IEC 60529 (IPX5) certification. Water resistance refers to preventing water from entering the enclosure through the front panel when the product is installed in the chassis, rather than making the entire enclosure water-resistant.

A: The MB991SK-B does not support the SATA 3.3 / SAS 3.0 PWDIS feature. If you install the SATA/SAS HDD/SSD with PWDIS in MB991SK-B , the drive will not spin, and the system won't detect the drive. See the list below for known SATA/SAS HDD/SSD with the PWDIS feature.
While we recommend to avoid using the SATA/SAS HDD/SSD with PWDIS, you can use the methods below to disable the PWDIS feature physically if you already purchased the drive:
Method 1 – Using the Molex to SATA adapter or cable to disconnect the power to Pin 3 of the SATA power connector.
Molex to SATA Adapter Molex to SATA Cable Method 2 – Placing Kapton tape on Pin 1-3 of the SATA/SAS power connector to isolate the 3.3V power, as shown below.

Q: I feel that the drive tray's upper and lower metal spring is stuck when inserting the drive tray. What should I do?
A: Remove the drive tray from the enclosure and reinsert the tray without putting excessive pressure on the metal mesh sheet in front of the tray. Excessive force on the front metal mesh sheet may bend the top and bottom metal spring, causing difficulties when inserting the drive tray. Therefore, please do not forcingly insert the drive tray when this happens as it may cause damage to the metal spring.

With ICY DOCK’s 3.5” drive bay enclosure series, we can maximize the unused 3.5" drive bay of any workstation with an easily removable drive enclosure in the frontal bay. We believe this is critical for most industries that are transitioning to be more efficient, frequently require more drive swap than others, and the ability to transport data from one system to another when drives are in the frontal bay as opposed to being stored internally.
